Learning to Talk Empty Learning to Talk

Post by EnglishAlex13 Sat Jun 02, 2012 2:15 pm

The grass was warm and soft underfoot in the open clearing as the sun shone down bathing Jesse in it's live-giving energy. It was a calm day with no wind yet the trees and plants surrounding him still danced; each in their own time yet all in harmony. Jesse knew that this was nothing out of the ordinary however, knowing that the forest he was in was the home of many nymphs and other woodland creatures. He had learnt this about a month ago but ever since he was young he had always known there was something more to nature than you first see and it was that sense of greater being that had brought him to Demi God Academy in the first place.
He dropped his shoes onto the forest floor and took off his jacket and shirt to reveal a very pale and fairly thin chest. Dropping these on top of his shoes he lay down next to them on his back and stared up into the blue sky above. The clouds drifted lazily across it as though they too felt like it was too nice of a day to hurry or rush. He closed his eyes and let himself become part of the forest; the energy from the grass under his back flowed through him and a feeling of utter peace overcame him, he felt as though he could lie here for ever as part of nature, the sounds of the forest his lullaby and the grass and flora beneath him his bed.

Cassie bit her lip as she retreated into the forest, rubbing the pale, revealed skin of her forearms. She didn't generally flash skin, but today was too hot to cover up her scar-ridden arms, so she was just in a plain yellow t-shirt instead. Her senses were naturally alert, scanning the surrounding area. Somewhere within the foliage, she noted a small creature shrouded in shadow. Hmm. Must be a squirrel. she thought to herself. She wasn't sure though; she couldn't see it because of the blackness it was shrouded in. Everyone had their own shadow, and not just the one that followed behind you. No, everyone had a shadow of their lifeforce. Usually, it was almost transparent, however, once you got closer to death it got darker and darker. First it turned to an off-white. Then grey. Then a darker grey. In the end, you were cloaked in a thick black shadow, and your features were barely visible. Just like the squirrel. She stared at the small mammal as it paused for a moment, it's little nose twitching, it's muscles tensing. Then... BAM. Out of nowhere, a bird swooped down, catching the rodent in it's beak. Thus, the squirrel was no more. And Casper had been right once more. Whenever she told demi-gods about her ability, they were generally surprised at her ability to stay, well, alive. It was known that other siblings of hers had been driven to death because of their experiences.
Casper sighed, as she weaved in between the trees, trailing her fingers over the rough bark. She completed her scan of the area, after getting distracted by a squirrel. Nothing dangerous [[or related to her, thank God]]. Just wildlife and another demi-god. Not up for socializing, she started a perimeter around him, keeping her eye on the presumably male demi-god. Who knows? Maybe something interesting would happen, a demi-god in the open.

Learning to Talk Empty Re: Learning to Talk

Louis walked through the trees of the forest, admiring how beautiful it was today. He knew everything there was to know about the forest, he could walk through the trees with his eyes closed. Louis spent, almost all of his free time in the forest, whenever he had a break from protecting demi gods that is. He saw in the distance a young girl walking around, she seemed to be waiting for something. Louis looked in her direction and noticed a young boy laying on the ground, in the clearing. Strange, he thought to himself, sometimes he wondered about these demi-gods and their strange antics.

Learning to Talk Empty Re: Learning to Talk

Jesse lay on the grass and in his meditative state he started to hear whispers; but not disturbing and worrying whispers of insanity. No, these were pleasant as though a summer breeze was blowing through his mind; clearing out all of his bad thoughts and memories. He knew what they were because, like the numinous feeling he got whenever he connected with nature, he had heard these ever since he could remember. They were telling him something now though; two other sentient life forms were approaching him and neither were hostile.
This news reassured him that he was safe in this forest and he continued to day-dream in his meditation.

Casper stopped walking, hiding herself behind a large Oak tree. She rested her face against the bark, peeking out at the boy. She heard a rustle behind her [[or at least, somewhere in the forest with her]] and assumed that there was something else with them. It probably was something innocent, like another demi-god or a satyr. No need to worry. She looked down at the converse on her feet, and spotted a large, black ant edging over the toe. Scrunching her nose, she kicked the tree quickly, crushing the bug. She really had no care for nature, unless she was driving through it. Even then, she would be more astounded by the car than the wildlife. She sighed once more, and stopped crushing the bug against the tree. Not liking the idea that there'd be more [[bugs were generally black because they were always close to death]] she crept towards the next tree in the front, before tripping over an overly-large root.
"Ouch..." she mumbled to herself, obviously catching her knee on something on the floor. Her literal trip resulted in a ripped knee of her jeans, and a small trickle of blood down her leg. It was all cool though, nothing that couldn't be fixed. She stood up again, pressing her front against the tree and observed the boy once more.

"Thats what you get for killing an innocent little ant." I replied from behind the girl, as i stepped out of the shadows. "what makes you think you have the right to end the life of something that had nothing to do with you?" I questioned her, upset. I walked towards the girl, menacingly. "Honestly you people have no respect for anything, not animals, not nature, nothing. Its terrible to see people like you destroying such a beautiful thing."

Jesse's feeling of tranquility and awe ended for a split second as something died of an unnatural cause; but then everything was calm again and he drifted back into his half-sleep. He felt like he couldn't get up from the soft, comfortable grass, but even if he could he wouldn't want to. His life was perfect right now; he had no problems, no worries and not a care in the world.

She scowled, her temper losing a couple of inches as the boy chastised her. She turned to face him, her jaw twitching as a smooth sheet of anger passed through her body. She compressed it though, and met the being with a calm, composed posture.
"He was ready to die. The soul had outlasted it's will, and it was disconnecting. Me squishing it was how his fate had been pre-determined. The Fates had made it so; I am merely here to carry out the menial work." her voice was deadpan, eyes dead, void of emotion. It was easiest to break it to people this way. "'We people' have full respect for nature. Death is a part of nature. 'We people' have a full respect for death, and all her friends. So please, don't get self righteous before you know the facts." she sighed, turning around again to face the tree. She liked this tree. It was... comfy.

Louis looked shocked by the response, words seemed to fail him. "..., ..., well ive never really thought of it that waybefore. But, i guess if you think of it that way it makes sense." Louis replied after a few moments. Louis's face went red, he had just been stood up by a daughter of death about a fact of nature. Nature was his area of expertice, death however was not. Even though he didnt consider death a part of nature in the way of plants and animals, he still felt like he was stupid.

Jesse continued to lie on the forest floor; he had never gotten to be still with nature for this long before, he'd always been distracted by something. But not today, today was perfection. As he lay on the spongy grass, he started to feel the smooth tendrils of the grass start to grow and cover his bare chest; it felt nice; as though someone was gently tickling him and he knew that this was what he wanted most in the world. To lie here and just be over-taken by the earth.
But no. He knew he couldn't do that. He knew what would happen if he let the grass cover him. He would become a part of it forever and his mortal body would be used as nutrients for the rest of the forest. He'd continue to live, but only as a spirt of the forest.
And it was this realisation that kick-started him to wrench his arms off the warm, comfortable, seducing ground and pull himself up into a sitting position. And the new feeling was strange and foreign to him after such satisfaction; everything wrong with the world came flooding back to him and suddenly, in the middle of the open clearing on a beautiful summer's day, Jesse was cold. He pulled his T-shirt back on and stared at the ground, thinking about how close he had just been to never coming back to reality. He sat there and let this sink in.

She sensed a movement in the area, her senses tingling. She was always hyperaware, and she needed to be, with dangers always surrounding them. Turns out, the boy in the patch of grass just was re-clothing himself. She shook her head briskly at the Satyr, looking down her nose at his incompetence. Of course death was a part of nature, otherwise it wouldn't occur.
"Just because you don't think it's conventionally in your ideals about your chosen subject, doesn't mean that you avoid it's nasty bits." Her nose scrunched up in his direction. Casper wasn't happy at his insolence.

I apologize for shortness, but roo is sick.

Feeling the sun start to burn his pale neck, Jesse stood, picked up his jacket and shoes and looked around into the surrounding trees. To his right he could see two figures; one human and one Satyr and, feeling no strong desire to initiate a conversation with new people, he turned and left the open clearing back the way he had come. Back into the forest.

Sorry, Hawk but Jesse wouldn't randomly join a conversation with two people he doesn't know. Sad

To develop my character; I don't believe you can create a character and instantly know them. That's what I'm doing differently with this one. Just creating a topic with a really long story in though sounded not only fairly boring but also I thought it would seem quite arrogant and also this way we get to enjoy each others' writing. Smile
